Why Levantine?
Learning a language is always about engaging with the community and getting a true sense of what that language represents to locals, and how they interact on a daily basis. That’s why we chose for our course the Levantine dialect, one of the six main varieties of colloquial Arabic spoken across the Arab world, as it is the main vernacular spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Compared to the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), used more formally, Levantine dialect is easier to pronounce and understand, widely spoken, and more accessible, being adopted by most of the art and cultural movements in the Arab world
What should you expect?
In this course, you'll also learn how to describe people and actions more clearly using active participles (إسم الفاعل), and how to talk about changes over time using verbs like كان and صار. With the support of a custom-designed Arabic language booklet by your teacher Lilas, you’ll strengthen your ability to express yourself through guided dialogues, engaging exercises, and short video clips from the Syrian drama series Undocumented. As always, learning will stay fun and practical with games, visuals, role plays, and in-class conversations that bring the language to life.
What are the learning objectives?
This course is designed to help you carry out more fluent and expressive conversations in everyday and cultural settings. You’ll build on your existing knowledge while learning to connect vocabulary, grammar, and context more confidently and naturally.
