Content Left Column:
Why Levantine?
Learning a language is always about engaging with the community and getting a true sense of what that language represents to locals, and how they interact on a daily basis. That’s why we chose for our course the Levantine dialect, one of the six main varieties of colloquial Arabic spoken across the Arab world, as it is the main vernacular spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Compared to the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), used more formally, Levantine dialect is easier to pronounce and understand, widely spoken, and more accessible, being adopted by most of the art and cultural movements in the Arab world.
What are the learning objectives?
This course builds your ability to discuss post-conflict transformations, gender roles, hobbies, migration, and everyday life with increasing fluency and accuracy. You'll engage with authentic material — including short episodes from the Syrian sociopolitical series Undocumented — to strengthen your listening, narration, and vocabulary. You’ll also revisit key grammar concepts such as verbs and their derivatives, applying them in real-life contexts to boost your speaking and writing skills. Whether you're learning Arabic for personal growth or professional goals, this course will help you communicate more naturally, clearly, and confidently.
By the end of this ten-class course, you will be able to:
- Discuss Post-Conflict Transformations: Talk about social and urban life in Damascus after the fall of the regime, including changes in public order, transportation, economic challenges, and how people are rebuilding their daily lives.
- Analyze Shifts in Gender Roles: Engage in conversations comparing gender roles in the past and present across different societies — including parenting styles, access to education, professional choices, personal freedoms, political participation, and the role of stay-at-home dads.
Content Right Column:
- Express Personal Interests and Hobbies: Describe and ask about a wide range of hobbies and interests — from sports and arts to reading, crafting, and outdoor activities — and explain how these interests evolved over time.
- Handle Practical Daily Situations: Use appropriate language and expressions for real-life scenarios such as booking a hotel room, making an appointment, and filing a complaint — with a focus on clarity, politeness, and confidence.
- Discuss Experiences of Migration and Displacement: Understand and talk about the experiences of migrants and refugees — including reasons for leaving, challenges faced in host countries, integration, and the emotional and social aspects of displacement.
- Interpret and Use Grammar in Context: Deepen your understanding of verbs and their derivatives, and apply them accurately when discussing change, comparison, feelings, and actions in both formal and informal situations.
- Develop Listening and Narration Skills: Watch and analyze a short episode (3-5 minutes) from the Syrian sociopolitical drama Undocumented in each session, using it to enhance listening comprehension, narrative vocabulary, and reporting skills.
