Why Levantine?
Learning a language is always about engaging with the community and getting a true sense of what that language represents to locals, and how they interact on a daily basis. That’s why we chose for our course the Levantine dialect, one of the six main varieties of colloquial Arabic spoken across the Arab world, as it is the main vernacular spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Compared to the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), used more formally, Levantine dialect is easier to pronounce and understand, widely spoken, and more accessible, being adopted by most of the art and cultural movements in the Arab world.
What are the learning objectives?
In this course, you will take your Arabic skills to new heights by exploring complex and meaningful issues relevant to today’s world. You will participate in discussions about media and misinformation, mental health, labor rights, and body-related social norms. To strengthen your listening and storytelling skills, you’ll also continue watching short episodes (3–5 minutes) from the acclaimed Syrian sociopolitical series Undocumented. Alongside conversation, the course focuses on revising and practicing grammar in context — including the imperative tense, conditional structures, and other expressive forms that support clear, impactful communication.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Critique Media and Misinformation: Describe and analyze media content, identify bias and misinformation, and discuss the influence of social media, censorship, and propaganda across different contexts.
- Discuss Work, Unemployment & Labor Rights: Talk about job markets, working conditions, and labor rights; describe career paths, workplace challenges, and the impact of informal employment.
Content Right Column:
- Express Emotions and Talk About Mental Health: Use appropriate vocabulary to describe feelings, stress, and mental well-being; engage in conversations around therapy, coping, and changing social attitudes toward mental health.
- Explore Body, Health & Social Norms: Discuss topics such as body image, beauty standards, and public health; compare traditional and modern views on health, wellness, and appearance.
- Develop Listening and Narration Skills: Watch and analyze a short episode (3–5 minutes) from the Syrian sociopolitical drama Undocumented in each session, using it to strengthen listening comprehension, narration, and vocabulary retention.
- Revise and Apply Key Grammar Concepts: Practice the imperative tense, conditional structures, and other core grammatical tools in real-life contexts related to the course themes — improving both accuracy and fluency in complex expression.
