Tour Subtitle:

Political City Tour

Tour Date:

26. October 2024

Join us in Berlin's vibrant Kreuzberg neighbourhood as our guide, Hamza, takes us on an immersive journey that bridges the past and present through a queer migrant lens. Having lived in the queer scenes of Beirut and Berlin, Hamza will bring the two realities closer to each other. As we learn more about the queer scenes of both cities, we will talk about historic events and dive into crucial topics concerning queer life in Berlin as well as in West Asia and North Africa (WANA).

Content Left Column:

Our journey begins in the past. In Berlin, the city that has lived triumphs and tragedies alike and yet emerged as the city with a vibrant queer scene that we know today. As we walk the streets of Kreuzberg, we will weave together stories from Berlin and Beirut. We will celebrate resilience, appreciate our hard-won freedoms and privileges and speak about today's struggle for the human rights of queers around the world.

Moving beyond history, we will arrive at the doorstep of one of Berlin's earliest parties for queer migrants. Through photographs, music and shared narratives, we will honor the legacy of all the queers who paved the way for the present.

With a quick detour to Beirut - often seen as the last refuge for queers from the region - we will confront the reality of persecution and hate speech and how it has affected and continues to affect the queer community in Lebanon. By connecting the dots between the past and present, and between the two contexts, we will answer some questions and raise some more.

Content Right Column:

If you have some extra time, plan some time after the tour to go back to one of the tour stops (2 U-Bahn stops or ~20 minutes walk away) which is a museum. The tour will not allow for enough time to visit all sections of the museum, but we highly recommend taking your time there! Access is free of charge.

The tour will start at Lausitzerplatz in the park by the church facing Restaurant Baraka (Lausitzer Pl. 6, 10997 Berlin). You can find the exact location HERE.

Tour Overview
Hamza
I am a public health specialist working on disability inclusion and justice for a global organisation. I also co-founded a collective for queer Arabs in Berlin, with which I advocate for liberation and the rights of queers in general and queer refugees in particular. I hope that this tour will contribute to the efforts to preserve Beirut as a refuge for queers from the region.
