Tour Title:

Pakistan - History and Present

Tour Subtitle:

Introduction Seminar

Tour Date:

29. September 2024

Religious fanaticism, terrorism, the smouldering conflict with India - these are often the first associations which come up in discourses about Pakistan. Rarely do we dive deeper into the historic, political or socio-cultural contexts, or learn about the country's incredible religious and cultural diversity or the great hospitality of its people. In this online workshop, however, we'll cover a wide range of different topics - from history, politics and religion to more cultural matters such as food and music - that will leave you with a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of contemporary Pakistan.

Content Left Column:

Over the course of six hours, we will cover several millenia of Pakistani history: Although a very young nation state, Pakistan nonetheless has a long-standing and significant  past. While it once was the stronghold of the extremely advanced Indus civilization, it was continuously exposed to the influence of various great powers in the following centuries. Layers and traces of the influential powers are visible until today in Pakistan, some include the time of Alexander the Great, Indian empires, several Islamic empires as well as Great Britain.

In addition to the more distant past and its effects on the present, we will take a closer look at the  events that have unfolded since the founding of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1947.  Furthermore, a discussion on different social and ethnic groups, the relevant  political stakeholders and power dynamics will take place. More recent economic developments and many other aspects which shape Pakistan and the everyday realities of the people living there will also be discussed.

Content Right Column:

In addition to history, socio-politics and economy, we will also focus on the impressive geographical and cultural diversity. Pakistan boasts a 1000 km long coastline as well as a the partly fertile, partly arid lowlands.  Coniferous forests and rugged high mountains with glaciers in the north, allows visitors and citizens of Pakistan an incredible variety of landscapes.

Just as diverse as its flora and fauna is Pakistan's society with a large number of ethnic and religious minorities. This diversity in its demographic is shown through the wide cultural expressions across different regions. In conclusion we will be sure to at discuss some of the country's culinary delights, sample some music and speak about arts and literature, typical clothing as well as important festivals and celebrations.
